Holiday Windows
Every December · Chattanooga, TN · Annual
Storefronts, hotels and bars across Chattanooga, hand-painted onto the glass every holiday season and washed off in January. She has been doing it for years and the list keeps growing.
Location
Chattanooga, TN
Year
Annual
Scope
Commercial · Seasonal · Storefront
Surfaces painted
Plate glass · Doors · Transoms · Whole storefronts
Painted on in December, washed off in January, booked again the next year.
Every December Olivia paints the windows of storefronts, hotels, restaurants and bars across Chattanooga. The Dwell Hotel, Mellow Mushroom, Fischer Evans, Ria's Mart, Cupcake Kitchen, Humanaut, the Marriott, Snapdragon.
It is painted directly onto the glass, by hand, on a ladder, in the cold — and it comes off in January. Nothing survives. That is part of why businesses book it again the following year, and why the list keeps getting longer.
The range is deliberate. A jeweller gets silver line work you could mistake for etched glass. A cannabis lounge gets something else entirely.

A detail
It all happens on a ladder, in the cold, in December
Painted straight onto the glass from the outside, in the weeks when every one of these businesses is at its busiest. The whole season's work gets washed off in January — which is exactly why they book it again.

A detail
Some are one window. Some are a whole building.
Humanaut got red swirls across every pane on the building. A jeweller gets silver fine enough to pass for etched glass. The brief changes completely depending on whose window it is, which is the part she likes.
